Ghana Association of Comedians damns Ga Traditional Council for performing without authorisation

The Ghana Association of Comedians (GAC) has sharply criticised the Ga Traditional Council for performing stand-up comedy without a licence.

In a press release, the group criticised the Ga Traditional Council in the strongest terms possible, noting that this was a manifestation of the lawlessness and indiscipline that has overtaken the country since Salifu Amankwah stopped brutalising people at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

But the general public has reacted with great enthusiasm to the performance of the Council, and like Oliver Twist is asking for more. Some people have even speculated that the comedians are motivated solely by jealousy of the pure comedic skills of the traditional council. But the GAC has vehemently denied this:

‘For the avoidance of doubt, we the Ghana Association of Comedians are not jealous of the comedic genius of the Ga Traditional Council. And we do not by any means feel threatened by them. But we are asking that anyone who wants to perform as a stand-up comedian should obtain appropriate documentations and authorisatiion. This is no laughing matter!’

The GAC is reportedly heading to court later in the week to seek an interlocutory injunction that would prevent the Ga Traditional Council from making further public performances until they obtain the necessary authorisation.

But former National Security Advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah has proposed that the best way to deal with the traditional council is to treat them with a fist of iron and to smash them into conformity. ‘This indiscipline has to stop!’ he barked, ‘We didn’t fight for independence for this kinds of anarchic behaviour.’

In another development, the Ghana Christian Council has also accused the Ga Traditional Council of plagiarism. In a radio interview, a spokesman for the Council said it was ‘unfair, unprofessional and dishonourable’ for the Ga Traditional Council to use biblical material without attribution.

‘We all know that the original idea of punishing offences with a massive flood happened already during the time of Noah. We also know that using a conflagration to punish alleged wrongdoings is recorded in the biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah. We are not saying that our ancestors cannot borrow ideas from the bible when they want to torture us. But at least, let them acknowledge the source of their inspiration.’
