Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has rallied traders in Kumasi to support the $298 million Kejetia Redevelopment Project because the benefits to the economy would be enormous.

The project, he said, though had created some inconveniences for some of them, they should show good understanding and cooperate with the contractors.

“Kumasi is fast developing and it is, therefore, the agenda of the government to embark on viable projects to address challenges associated with the population growth and increase in trading activities”, he added.

Alhaji Dauda said this when he paid a working visit to inspect the progress of work on the project on Wednesday.

He appealed to all affected traders to accept to relocate to satellite markets built for them by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The project has been awarded to Brazilian contractors, Messrs Contracta Engenharia Limited and the phase-one involves re-construction of the Kejetia Terminal and building of 10,000 stores.

This is expected to be completed in 24 months after which the focus would be shifted to the next phase – redevelopment of the Central Market.

Alhaji Dauda spoke of plans to give the needed face-lift to the Atonsu and Asawasi satellite markets.

Mr. Peter Anarfi-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, urged the contractors to do everything to meet the time lines.
