Phase II of $39m Sakumonu sea defence project completed

Messrs Amandi Holding Limited, a construction company, has handed over the phase II of the Sakumonu Sea Defence Project to the Government.

The project, aimed at protecting the Sakumonu coastal stretch belt, entailed re-construction of an existing amour rock revetment of length 1000 metres.

Also a gravity wall of length 550 metres as well as the construction of two groynes of length 70 metres along that section of the coast, which was eroding at an alarming rate due to the strong sea waves.

Mr David-Ben Ayun, General Manager of Amandi Holding Limited, said the second phase, which started in June 2013, was to give permanent protection to the Nungua-Tema beach road.

Mr Ayun said it would also protect the railway line from Asaprochona to Tema, as well as give protection to the Regional Maritime University and the Nungua-Sakumono Community.

He said the project, which costs $39 million, was of high quality that would prevent the sea from further eroding the strip of land along the beach road.

Dr Kwaku Agyeman Mensah, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, expressed gratitude to the contractors for the good job done and delivering the work on time.

He said this would enable people to undertake economic activities at ease to enhance their living conditions.

Dr Mensah said the project was one of seven other sea defense projects which were at various stages of completion at Ada, Aboadze, Nkotompo, New Takoradi, Anjou and Amanfo Kumah.

He, thus, called on the Tema Municipal Assembly to take good care of the reclaimed land and put it to good use.
