Sunyani’s University of Energy to get solar manufacturing and assembly plant

SolarThe University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is to set up an assembly plant for the manufacture and assembling of solar products at the University.

Currently discussions are on-going between the University and Zoomlion, a Ghanaian Waste Management Company and SolarGrid, a Canadian Company, to form a partnership for the project’s take-off, Professor (Mrs.) Esi Awuah, the Vice-Chancellor said on Saturday in Sunyani.

Prof. (Mrs.) Awuah who was addressing the fourth matriculation ceremony of the University said the project, upon completion would provide opportunity for some engineering students to undertake their internship or attachment in the company.

She therefore expressed optimism that through their increasing collaboration with their partners, they would continue to nurture high class professional graduates who could bring about the needed scientific, technological and socio-economic transformation.

Prof. (Mrs.) Awuah said: “globalization is about building partnerships, as in this knowledge age, knowledge generation is not confined to only the universities but includes industry and other organisations”.

Hence the University has partnered with several institutions to share ideas, provide platform for student and staff exchange, as well as serve as practical training grounds for their students for the mutual benefit of industry and the University, the VC indicated.

On enrolment for the 2015/2016 academic year, Prof. (Mrs.) Awuah said the University had 1,582 applications and 1,272, representing 80 per cent, qualified for admission.

She said the University was however able to admit only 794 students which represented 62 per cent of the total qualified applicants, bringing the institution’s total population to 2,377.

She said of the 794 admitted, 677 representing 85 per cent, were males while 117, representing 15 per cent, were females.
