NPP Okaikoi South aspirant drags party’s candidate to court over forgery
Ms Victoria Bright, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Okaikoi South Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has filed a suit at Accra High Court, seeking the disqualification of the party’s parliamentary candidate Ahmed Arthur, over forgery of documents.
She said Arthur made false declarations in his nomination form that he attended short courses in Public Relations, Management and Journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, leading to his disqualification in the 2012 constituency primary by the National Executive Council of the NPP.
The plaintiff said the false declaration were criminal acts bordering on criminality.
Ms Bright said despite the evidence, the defendant was asked by the NPP to contest the 2016 parliamentary primary.
She averred that having regard to the pendency of the application for an order of interlocutory injunction to restrain the conduct of the parliamentary primary, which had been given widespread publicity, many constituents were of the view that the election conducted on July 25 would not come off.
Ms Bright said Kwabena Agyepong, the then General Secretary of the NPP, however issued a statement that the primary should take place on August 2, and declared that the move was arbitrary, unlawful and usurpation of the constituency Parliamentary Elections Committee’s mandate.
She also pointed out irregularities in the voters’ register used for the election and is seeking that it should be declared null and void and of no effect.
