Guantanamo Bay detainee transfer countries list includes Ghana
The The New York Times and NPR have identified 56 countries to which detainees have been transferred from Guantánamo.
Ghana is included on this listed and the two detainees transferred to Ghana January 6, 2016 are listed against the country.
The two detainees transferred to Ghana are Khalid Mohammed Salih al-Dhuby and Mohammed Omar Mohammed Bin Atef.
The two men who were born in Saudi Arabia are considered Yemeni citizens based on their family and tribal ties according to military dossiers leaked by Pvt. Chelsea Manning.
According to the New York Times the men’s dossiers indicate that each of the men went to Afghanistan before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and were captured by Afghan forces in late 2001 and turned over to the United States.
The US government has been profusely thankful to Ghana for accepting the detainees. But the Ghanaian public has been ruffled and angered by the decision of the government to take in these men.
Some citizens are asking the government to return the detainees to where they were brought from or send them back to their home countries.
