Security task force to be deployed to deal with Fulani menace

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced the deployment of a security task force to stop the rising tension between Fulani herdsmen and the youth of Agogo from escalating.

Out-going Regional Minister, Mr. Peter Anarfi Mensah, who broke the news to journalists in Kumasi, said the measure is to also help avoid any spill-over to other areas.

He called for calm as the Council did everything to tackle the nuisance of the nomadic herdsmen.

He asked the enraged youth not to take the law into their own hands or do anything unlawful that would invite firm and resolute action from the security agencies.

Mr. Anarfi Mensah assured the people of maximum security protection and appealed to them to cooperate with the REGSEC for lasting peace.

The people of Agogo are furious over what they perceive to be the inaction of the state to act decisively to evict the Fulani, who had been terrorizing farmers and causing unimaginable destruction to food crop farms and the environment.

There had been many instances where some farmers had been killed by the nomads, others maimed, women raped and water bodies destroyed.

Apparently fed up with the atrocities and impunity of the herdsmen, the youth of Agogo led by the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, recently threatened to do everything to force out the Fulani from Agogo traditional lands.

They outlined a number of measures including a boycott of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Omanhene, stop selling food water and any other goods to the Fulani and refuse to transport them on vehicles and motorbikes.
