GPHA to operate new refrigerator container terminal
Director of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Mr Jacob Adorkor, has said the Authority would from February 29, begin operation at a new terminal where all refrigerator containers imported would be controlled and monitored.
He said the new 480 capacity terminal would enable the Authority to check illegal, falsification of signatures and documents as well as to identify people who come in to take deliveries of the containers.
Mr Adorkor disclosed this when Dr Hannah Bisiw, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, visited the ports to inspect new developments as a follow up to an earlier visit.
He said initial efforts yielded results, adding that there was the need to come up with new a development of checking companies who came to clear their containers because people could still devise different ways to evade them.
Mr Adorkor said companies without permit would not be able to clear; with the use of an electronic system all forged documents would not have their items cleared.
He said formerly the refrigerator containers were left at various terminals at the Port and created congestion making movement very difficult.
He said there would be uninterrupted power supply because stand-by generators had been put in place and all the refrigerator containers would go to one point where delivery would be effected.
Dr Bisiw said her visit was due to a review of measures to check falsification of documents at the Port.
She pledged to support the control of refrigerator containers to allow only the permissible to enter the country.
Dr Bisiw said some years back it was detected that some documents had signatures of former Ministers of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and sometimes signatures of Ministers who were not even in the country.
She said the visit was to let Ghanaians know where government had reached with efforts to check illegalities at the ports.
