Central Region records 228 fire outbreaks in two months
Seven deaths occurred out of a total of 228 fire outbreaks recorded from January to February in the Central Region, the Central Regional Fire Officer, has said.
Mr Gilbert Wiafe, the Regional Fire Officer, made this known when opening a new Fire Station at Agona Nsaba.
He said properties destroyed are estimated at GHC 40,000.
The Regional Fire Officer said the figure was alarming and appealed to the chiefs, assembly members and other stakeholders to intensify the campaign against fire outbreaks.
Dr Gilbert Brown Gaize, Chief Fire Officer, said it is the policy of government to open fire stations in all the districts nationwide to help prevent fires.
He cautioned Ghanaians, especially estate developers to engage qualified electrical contractors to wire their buildings to avoid the occurrence of fires.
Dr Gaize said Agona East Fire Station was the first to be opened in the country this year and urged officers to take good care of the equipment.
Mrs Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyer, Deputy Central Regional Minister and MP for the area thanked government for the provision of social amenities to improve the lot of the people in the area.
She said some of the amenities included the Community Senior High School (SHS), MASLOC Office, National Health Insurance Office, a new market for Agona Nsaba and the provision of a magistrate court.
The Deputy Regional Minister thanked the outgoing Central Regional Minister Mr Thomas Acquinas Tawiah Quansah, who was present at the function, for his role in the development of the area.
