Voting over in Tain

The crunch run-off voting in the Tain constituency of the Brong Ahafo region is over and ballots are being counted.

But before the final results are determined, National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters have started jubilating.

Reports reaching ghanabusinessnews.com say, the NDC supporters are clad in white, with some pouring talcum powder on themselves (the pouring of talcum powder on the body is a sign of victory in Ghana.)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) had since Thursday January 1, 2009 announced a boycott of the cliffhanger vote and it advised all its supporters to stay away from voting.

Meanwhile reports of the results trickling in so far indicate that some voters indeed, have voted for the NPP.

The final results would not be known until tomorrow Saturday, January 3, 2009.

President J. A. Kufuor in his New Year address to the nation Thursday January 2, 2009, called on the two political parties to yield to the authority of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Voting could not take place at Tain during the nationwide run-off Sunday December 28, due to what the EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan described as “circumstances beyond our control.”

The run-off was therefore fixed for Friday, but by the evening of Thursday, the NPP decided to abstain from the elections and then pulled out all of its agents and activists who were campaigning in the constituency out. The party also advised its supporters to stay away from voting.
