University of Energy launches 10-year strategic plan
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, has launched a 10-year strategic plan aimed at raising its level to achieve stated vision and mission in a cost-effective and proactive manner.
Spanning year 2016 to 2026, the prestigious plan comes with a 10 million US$ endowment fund to help finance all strategies crafted to enable it meet its set goals.
The Plan is in three phases, namely, the immediate which stretches from 2016-2020, medium, also from 2020-2023 and the final, covering 2023-2026 period,
Professor Daniel Obeng Ofori, Pro Vice chancellor of the University and Chair of the strategic plan committee at an official launch in Sunyani said the Plan provided a framework for the realization of the University’s attainable goals and objectives with measurable indicators and responsible actors.
“Empowering the next generation of intellectuals for national development”, was the theme for the launching event
Outlining some components of the plan, Prof. Ofori said the document among other things, proposed the introduction of new programmes and the establishment of satellite campuses in line with the multi-campus mandate of the University in a logical and chronological manner.
“It also responded to stakeholders’ expectations for top-class tertiary education, by addressing challenges of students’ enrolment and programme quality, inadequate logistical and support services in addition to weak relationship of tertiary institutions with employers of labour and the absence of entrepreneurial development skills in core programmes”, he said.
Prof. Ofori said broad thematic areas that formed the basis of the Plan included ‘Human Resource Development’, ‘Teaching, Learning and Research Excellence’, ‘Physical Infrastructure Development’, ‘Internationalisation’, and ‘Quality Assurance’.
Others are ‘Information Communication Technology’, ‘Environmental Safety’, ‘Maintenance and Sanitation’, ‘Ancillary Services’, ‘Financial Resource Mobilisation’, and ‘Governance and Leadership’, he added.
Prof. Ofori called for the support of all sections of the University- from students to the Governing Council for the achievement of the vision and goals of the institution.
The Dean of School of Engineering at the University and Chair of the Endowment Fund Committee, Dr. Nana Kwasi Diawuo explained that the cedi equivalent of the US$10 Million was expected to be realized within the stipulated period of 10 years.
Dr. Diawuo said the target within the first year of its launch was GH₵10Million and subsequent donations all be invested within the period.
He said after the 10-year period, the University would use the interest accrued on that investment for developmental purposes in the context of its vision and mission of establishment.
Dr. Diawuo announced that the University would engrave the names of donors who contributed more than GH₵20,000.00 on plaques of gold and those in excess of GH₵10,000.00 and GH₵5,000.00 on silver and bronze plaques respectively.
