Stop predicting winners of November polls – media told

JournalistsMr Dogbe Adukpo Selormey, the Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, (EC) has cautioned media practitioners and pollsters against forecasting the winners of the November 7 polls.

He said the practice was not advisable and it could be a recipe for disaster should the predictions go wrong.

Mr Selormey was speaking at a workshop; “Capacity Building of Media Practitioners in Election Reportage and Highlights of  the Constitutional Instrument  91 (C.I. 91)”.

It was under the theme, “Enhancing Inclusiveness in Ghana’s Electoral Process.”

The workshop was supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Mr Selormey said while it was acceptable for the media to publish provisional election results from the EC, it was dangerous for them to predict winners, based on perceived voting trends.

“Yes, you can tally results and mention them on air or publish them but don’t predict or be emphatic on voting trends because election is a game of surprises,” he told the GNA.

Giving highlights on the C.I. 91, Mr Selormey said polling stations remained restricted areas and urged media houses to apply for accreditation ahead of time for access to the stations.

He urged practitioners to regularly contact the Commission for information to avoid misinformation and misrepresentations.
