Demand accountability from MPs – MP
Mr Alhassan Azong, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, has urged communities, Civil Society Organisations, and the media to demand accountability from Members of Parliament.
Mr Azong, the People National Convention (PNC) Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Builsa South Constituency, who is seeking re-election, made the call when he was endorsed by popular acclamation by the Party at Fumbisi, in the Builsa South District.
The MP alleged that some Members of Parliament had failed their constituents by diverting statutory funds meant for development into their pockets at the expense of the communities.
“It is time Members of Parliament are made to render accounts about their stewardship to their constituencies,” he stated.
“There are certain statutory funds allocated to every one of us Members of Parliament irrespective of one’s party to complement the development initiatives of Government and the district assemblies. These funds are so vulnerable that some MPs can abuse them with impunity”.
Mr Azong said if all Members of Parliament were to utilise the statutory funds and the other funds meant for development in their communities, there would have been massive development across the country.
He said his priority when reelected, would be to develop the human resource base of the Constituency and so he used his statutory funds, which included his share of the Common Fund, with his personal resources, to sponsor over 1,000 students.
The MP said the Kanjaga Bridge, which collapsed some years back and was making transportation of goods and services from Fumbisi to the Southern sector difficult, but it had been rehabilitated through his share of the Common Fund.
Mr Azong said he utilised part of his Common Fund for the construction of bridges with culverts for the Uasi-Fumbisi and Baasa roads in his constituency and secured another fund from the GETFund to complete the Kalaasa, Kanjaga, Doninga, Yipaala Balerensa and Bachonsa Primary schools in his Constituency.
He said he also helped to complete the Uasi Community Health Planning Centre, which had remained uncompleted since 1999 and Jiningsa Community Health Planning Centre.
He said he used the Social Intervention Fund to provide solar lights to Junior High Schools and Health centres in his Constituency and he had submitted a proposal to the Japanese Government to provide a number of boreholes to the communities.
The Flag-bearer of the PNC, Dr Edward Mahama, therefore, appealed to the people to retain Mr Azong as their MP to enable him to continue with the massive development projects.
He expressed the hope that in the near future, the MP would become the flag-bearer of the PNC since he had a lot of potential that could turn the fortunes of Ghanaians around.
On corruption, Dr Mahama said Ghana was failing in its fight against the act because some Ghanaian media practitioners were also corrupt.
He, therefore, urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage by exposing wrong doings in the society.
“The fight against corruption is a shared responsibility that all Ghanaians should take seriously to nib the canker in the bud,” he advised.
Dr Mahama said the only party that could rescue Ghanaians from the hardship was the PNC, which would be more transparent to all Ghanaians.
