Ghana Fire Service warns of tough action against safety breaches
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned of firm action against any breaches of fire safety regulations.
Mr. Semekor Fiadzo, the Ashanti Regional Fire Officer, said it would make sure that developers comply with the requirements for obtaining fire certificate.
He was speaking at a joint meeting with timber companies, financial and educational institutions and media houses in Kumasi which provided the platform to discuss ways to prevent fires to protect lives and property.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Fiadzo expressed discomfort with the high rate of fire disasters in the region and said they were determined to bring this down through the combination of public education and enforcement of fire regulations.
The target, he said, was to reduce fire outbreaks by about 60 per cent, adding that, this was achievable.
He spoke of intensification of fire prevention education in the communities, schools and on radio.
ACFO Fiadzo asked that residential and commercial buildings install fire extinguishers and protective equipment, emergency exits and directional signs to allow for smooth evacuation during a fire emergency.
He also advised against the use of sub-standard electrical wires and said electrical installation must be done by qualified electricians.
