AMA closes illegal dumping site
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has closed down an illegal dumping site, near the International Central Gospel Church at Abossey Okai in Accra.
It has also directed all private refuse collectors, known as “Boola Taxi” to send their garbage to the transferring dumping sites at Kokomlemle and Mallam.
Mr Sam Ayeh-Datey, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director of the AMA announced this at a meeting with the members of the “Ghana Boola Taxi Association on Friday.
He told the Ghana News Agency that the AMA has put measures in place to ensure good sanitation in these areas.
He said if the indiscriminate dumping of refuse is not stopped the situation could lead to an outbreak of diseases.
He said the AMA Special Task Force would keep surveillance at the illegal sites to arrest and prosecute anyone found flouting the directive.
The Coordinating Director said the Boola Taxi collectors charge fees ranging from GH¢1.00 to GH¢5.00 without paying anything to the Assembly, while creating nuisance to the detriment of the lives of residents.
“Regrettably the AMA is going to spend GH¢156,000 to clear all the mounting garbage at the illegal sites,” he said.
Mr Ayeh-Datey said the land on which the illegal dumping is taking place belongs to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and its facilities on it has been stolen, hence the need to close down the place.
He disclosed that a new transfer site, which is almost near completion, would opened soon at Amamomo in Accra.
