About 1,800 displaced by rainstorm in Eastern Region

RainsClose to 1800 people have been displaced by a three-day rainstorm in parts of the Eastern Region which started in most parts of the region on May 20, destroying the roofing of 125 buildings including that of seven school buildings.

The affected areas are the Upper West Akyem, Lower West Akyem, Asuogyaman, Akyemansa, East Akyem and Yilo Krobo Municipalities.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Mr Ransford Owusu, the Regional National Disaster Management (NADMO) Coordinator said, his outfit has mobilised and sent relief items to the affected people.

He said items such as roofing sheets, mattresses, bags of rice and maize, mosquito nets and coils and buckets would bring relief to the affected victims.

Mr Owusu advised the public to take advantage of the rains and plant more trees in their communities, especially in the schools to serve as wind brakes.

He said his outfit is on the ground educating people on what to do during the rainy season to minimise the impact of the rains and ensure an incident-free raining period.

Mr Owusu said NADMO has also liaised with the Health Ministry to sensitise the public on the health implications associated with the season and how to deal with its related diseases.

He appealed to organisations such as the UNICEF who assisted NADMO two years ago, to come to their aid and help support communities which would be affected by floods.
