Sixteen health institutions to run degree programmes

Sixteen (16) health institutions across the country have been selected to run degree programmes, beginning this year.

Professor Otoo Ellis, Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who announced this said this, would be done on pilot basis and under the supervision of the University.

The Health Ministry (MOH), Ghana Health Services and the Health Training Institutions Council would provide technical support.

He did not name the chosen institutions but said they would offer degree programmes in community health, general nursing, midwifery and environmental health.

The Vice Chancellor was addressing a joint graduation ceremony of 28 training institutions of the Health Ministry in Kumasi.

In all, 3,167 trained nurses graduated at the end of the three-year course and were presented with certificates.

This is the third graduation ceremony to be held by the University following the signing of a memorandum of Understanding, between the KNUST and the MOH under which the former is mandated to oversee the academic programmes of the MOH training institutions.

Prof. Ellis counselled the graduating nurses to be client-focused and uphold high standards of professionalism.

They should bring the expertise acquired to bear on their work.
