Mahama promises fertile environment for technology development
President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday advised the youth who are desirous of developing their own enterprises, especially in the realm of technology, to brace themselves against risks and challenges.
He said nothing good came cheap and that all the big brands on the international scene such as Apple, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sharp began small and went through challenges before getting to their present states.
Speaking at the Second Mobile and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Exhibition in Accra on the theme: “Digital Economy – Untapped Resource for Accelerated Economic Growth,” the President said risks and challenges were part of the transformation of all sectors including the telecommunication industry.
The exhibition, organised by Coasters Company Limited, would provide a platform for thought-provoking technology development ideas on the use of technology in creating jobs for the teeming youth.
It was attended by youth groups and telecommunication organisations across the country.
President Mahama said apart from establishing the Fibre Optic Centre in Ho that would serve the Volta, Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions, plans were also afoot to connect the country from Ho to Tema to cater for the connection needs of those in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions.
He said Ghana had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Mauritius to establish the Tema ICT Centre.
President Mahama said the programme, on completion, would be able to accommodate over 5,000 workers in the premises and also facilitate Internet connectivity and create jobs.
He gave the assurance that government would provide all the necessary networks that would enhance investment in that sector.
The President appealed to telecommunication operators to beef up their systems against cyber crimes and other unorthodox use of technology in the country.
Mr George Spencer Quaye, the Chief Executive Officer of Coasters Company Limited, said all over the world technology was paving the way for development and the company would continue to create opportunities that would empower small scale communication enterprises to blossom for development.
