Medeama lose in Mazembe
Ghana’s sole representative in this year’s Africa club competition Medeama SC lost by three goals to one in their first group phase match of the 2015/16 CAF Confederations Cup in Lubumbashi against TP Mazembe, DR Congo.
The Tarkwa based side took an early lead in the first half when workaholic midfielder Malik Akowuah smashed home close from the box.
Medeama’s joy was however cut short some few minutes later when Zambian playmaker Reinford Kalaba equalized with a diving header. Tp Mazembe increased the pressure on their opponents forcing them into a defensive position.
Medeama could not contain the incessant pressure from Mazembe and before long Burkinabe Salif Coulibaly headed home from a corner kick to give his side the lead late in the first half.
Medeama after the came up strongly in search of the equaliser and dominated play over a long spell with good ball possession but could not create any meaningful chances.
A swift counter break from Mazembe on the left side of attack gave them the second goal when Kalaba scored a sweet curler to register a brace.
Medeama are now at the bottom of Group A with the defeat after match day 1, whiles TP Mazembe tops the group on goals difference. Algerian side M.O. Bejaia are second on the table after beating Zambian club, Young Africans by a goal to nil.
