Effia-Nkwanta gynaecology ward collapses during surgery

Steth3Patients and staff of the Gynaecology Ward of the Effia-Nkwanta Western Regional Hospital escape death last Thursday when portion of the ward caved in during surgery.

The wall collapsed and broke the ceiling which destroyed some surgical machines at the facility around 2300 hours when doctors were carrying out surgery on three pregnant women on that fateful day.

The incident created fear and panic among the staff and patients who cried unto the Almighty God to save their lives.

The Head of Administration at the Hospital, Mr K. K Boakye confirmed the incident to the media in Takoradi,on Friday, and said the incident did not cause any injury or casualty.

He, however, indicated that due to the incident, all patients with surgical complications were referred to the Kwesimintsim Hospital for attention.

Commenting on the state of the hospital, Mr Boakye, said most of the hospital’s structures are weak since they had not seen any major renovation for many years.

He therefore appealed to the government to fast-track the construction of a new regional hospital.

Meanwhile, the GNA gathered that one of the patients referred to the Kwesimintsim Hospital after the incident died.

The source mentioned one Madam Hannah Kwofie, 31, who allegedly died from uterus fracture.

The Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital is the only referral centre in the Western Region for all medical conditions that require specialist attention.
