The Ghana Chamber of Mines will hold its second Ghana Mining Industry awards on December 1, 2016 to recognise excellence and the contribution of mining companies and individuals to the development of the country.

Mr Sulemanu Koney, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, who launched the Awards on Tuesday in Accra, said there is the need to bring to stakeholders’ attention the catalytic role of the sector in the Ghanaian economy.

“We expect to deepen these engagements in the coming years and hopefully get the authorities to appreciate the catalytic role the mining industry can play in our economy,” he said.

The first Ghana Mining Awards was held in 2015.

Mr Koney said the Chamber would continue to work with government and stakeholders to reinforce the successes and impact of the industry in the development process of the country.

The awards would be adjudicated by a board chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology with members from the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

In all, there would be 12 awards for grabs.

The board will assess the nominations received on specific categories and determine the winners based on the set categories.

The categories are: Lifetime Achievement Award, Best Performer in Innovation, Best Performer in Environmental Management, Best Performer in Social Investment, Best Performer in Occupational Health and Safety, Best Performer in Mine Supplies and Support Services and the flagship award, Mining Company of the Year.
