Wenzhou University of China to establish campus in Central Region
The Wenzhou University in China has agreed to establish a campus in the Central Region of Ghana, Professor Li Xiaokun, President of the University, has said.
A press statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the decision was the outcome of the previous meeting that the President of the University had with Mr Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah, Ghana’s Deputy Ambassador to China, a couple of weeks ago.
Prof. Li, who was on a reciprocal visit to Mr Ankrah in Beijing, said his request for the establishment of Chinese university campuses in Ghana had been granted in line with their expansion programmes to other countries.
A couple of weeks ago, Mr Ankrah visited the Wenzhou University and the Study in China Admission Systems (SICAS) where negotiations were made for top Chinese universities to open campuses in Ghana.
They also negotiated for the admission of 1,000 Ghanaians annually in top Chinese universities out of which 200 of the students would receive full scholarships to undertake courses in Pharmacy, Medicine and Civil Enginering.
The follow-up visit by the President of Wenzhou University, would therefore, pave way for preparatory works to be carried out before the establishment.
Prof. Li said the university had lined up investors to undertake those projects and would soon be talking to Ghana’s Ministry of Education through the Ghanaian Embassy in Beijing.
He said in line with that, authorities of Wenzhou University would be visiting Ghana in November this year.
Mr Ankrah, on his part, commended Prof. Li and the university authorities for their prompt response to their request and gave the assurance that the embassy would do everything possible to enhance its development.
“It is our mandate here at the embassy to pursue such laudable investments that will fall within the policies of the current political administration,” he said.
He said the partnership being forged by the two countries were in line with government’s resolve to liaise with both local and foreign universities to establish new campuses across the country.
