The African Union Commission (AUC) introduced the African passport in Kigali, Rwanda Sunday July 17, 2016 during the 27th Summit.
During the Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, host president Paul Kagame and Iddris Deby Itno, president of Chad and Chairperson of the AU were issued the first copies of the diplomatic version of the passport.
The AU says the issuance of the African passport is one of the steps towards achieving integration on the continent, to facilitate free movement of people and to boost intra-African trade.
Holders of the passport are allowed entry into AU member countries without requiring a visa and are allowed to stay for an initial 30 days, Dr. Nkosazana Zuma, outgoing AU Chair had said.
