Act firmly to cut out waste and corrupt practices – Minister

Directors of education have been asked to do more to cut out the waste and purge the service of corrupt practices.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, the Education Minister, said everything must be done to check the false claims, remove the ghost and fake teachers from the system.

She made the call in an address read for her at the 23rd annual meeting of the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) in Kumasi.

“Investing in quality education for positive transformation of the youth for national development” is the theme chosen for the five-day event.

It has brought together in excess of 230 divisional, regional, metropolitan, municipal and district directors from across the nation to review their activities and re-strategize to improve performance.

Prof Naana Opoku-Agyeman underlined the need for them to ensure timely submission of reports and inputs to facilitate the early release of funds for their operation.

She said the government was determined to provide the needed infrastructure, logistics and materials to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the schools.

“Indeed the effort of the government in this direction will be sustained and modified to ensure that the system is well resourced.”

She invited all stakeholders to accept to work together to create academically-friendly environment to raise performance.

Prof Otoo Ellis, immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), urged the directors to remain committed and dedicated to job of working to improve the quality of education.

They should provide strong leadership through effective supervision of schools for optimal use of the contact-hours, he added.
