Act decisively to stop the unapproved fees – Trainee nurses

NursesThe health authorities have been urged to act decisively to stop the nursing and midwifery training schools from charging unapproved fees.

The Ghana Nursing-Midwifery Trainees Association said the situation where trainees paid GHȼ4,500.00 instead of the approved fee of GHȼ1,400.00 should not be allowed to continue.

Mr. Godwin Akazee Asabire, the National President, said the students had become over-burdened and were finding the going really tough.

Making the call through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he also complained about the amount of between GHȼ50.00 and GHȼ100.00 “we are made to pay for clinical practice” and asked that this was scrapped.

He again made reference to the restoration of the trainee allowance by the government and said in as much as they were happy with the decision, they “find what is on offer woefully inadequate”.

He appealed that the allowance was raised from the GH¢150.00 to at least GH¢350.00 to cater for the huge expenses they had been making – paying for their accommodation, transportation feeding and medical kits during clinical practice.

It was on the account of this that the government would have to take a second look at the size of the allowance.

Mr. Asabire underlined the need to put in place appropriate measures to employ them into the mainstream healthcare system on completion of their training to reduce the growing unemployment among them.
