Police arrests and detains six over car robberies

PrisonA car-snatching gang operating in Kumasi and its outlying communities has been busted by the police and five people detained.

Their names were given as Veron Adams, Musban Sana, Abraham Zigah, Francis Quashie and Samuel Asante.

Also being held is One Hajia Azumi, believed to have bought one of the stolen cars.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, told a news briefing that the suspects within the space of barely one month robbed seven people of their vehicles.

These included a Susuki Swift, Daewoo Matiz, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, Mercedes Benz C240, Mercedes Benz C180 and Toyota Rav4.

Four of the vehicles – Susuki Swift, Daewoo Matiz, Hyundai Elantra and Mercedes Benz C240, have been recovered.

He said Adams, an ex-convict, masterminded the snatching of those vehicles and would often rob the owners at gunpoint.

He was arrested on September 13, in a failed attempt to seize a taxi from the driver at Domeabra near Agona.

Two men on a motorbike went to the aid of the driver and they overpowered and handed him to the police in Agona, where he gave his name as Inusah Ibrahim Adams.

ASP Tanko said Adams confessed to the crime during interrogation by the police and gave out his other four accomplices.

He again told investigators that they sold one of the stolen cars, a Suzuki Swift, to Hajia Azumi.

Meanwhile, the spouses of two of the detained suspects – Quashie and Asante, have profusely denied that their husbands are car snatchers, insisting they are innocent of the crime they are being accused of.
