Morocco submits application to rejoin AU
Morocco has finally applied to rejoin the African Union (AU), the Chair of the AU, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has said in a tweet.
“Adviser to #Morocco‘s Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Fassi Fihri handed me a copy of the Kingdom’s request to join,” she tweeted after a meeting with Fihri in New York City, where she is attending the UN General Assembly.
Morocco, left the AU 32 years ago after the organization recognized the independence of the Western Sahara. Morocco considers Western Sahara as its territory.
However, in July during the 27th Summit of the AU in Kigali, Rwanda, Morocco formally announced its decision to rejoin the Union. A message from King Mohammed VI said the time had come for his country to retake its place within its institutional family.
