Ghana issues notice for airline passengers using Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Samsung Galaxy Note 7The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has issued directives on the use of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone for airline passengers.

In a press release issued in Accra Monday September 26, 2016 and copied to ghanabusinessnews.com, the GCAA said all passengers and crew in possession of the device should not turn them on or charge them on board aircraft.

“Passengers and crew are hereby also prohibited from stowing these devices in any checked baggage, even when turned off,” the release said, adding that, “this directive shall form part of the safety briefing to passengers on board all airlines operating in Ghana, and operating into and out of Ghana, until otherwise directed by the Authority.”

The Authority further asked all service providers in the aviation industry in Ghana to ensure strict adherence to the safety precaution, until further notice.

Early September Samsung announced a global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 because of defective batteries. Samsung announced that 35 separate incidents have resulted in a Note 7’s battery heating up and catching fire.

The company subsequently recalled 2.5 million devices from the market.
