Sporting facilities to be constructed in Upper East and West – Minister
Mr Albert Abongo,The Upper East Regional Minister, has said government would fast-track the construction of sports facilities in the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
The Regional Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency, said government’s decision to fast-track the development of the sports facilities in the area was due to the excellent performance exhibited by the Bolgatanga All Stars and the Wa All Stars foot ball teams.
Whilst the Wa All Stars became the winners of the Ghana’s Premier League, the Bolgatanga All Stars made history by becoming the first ever team from the Upper East Region to qualify to the nation’s premier league.
But perhaps even more significant is that since organized league football began in Ghana in 1956, no team from the three northern regions has achieved this feat.
Mr Abongo said this when the management of the two teams including the players, paid him a courtesy call at the Regional Coordinating Council to present their trophies to him and to ask for his support.
He said the Regional Coordinating Council has formed a Committee to look into the development of the sports facilities in the region and pledged to task all the Municipal and District Assemblies as well as corporate bodies to contribute to the development of sports in the region.
The Regional Minister commended the management of the two teams and the players for their excellent performance saying their achievement was not a great honour to the two regions alone but the entire northern ecological zone.
Mr Abongo advised the players to be disciplined and to respect the management of their clubs as that was the only way their teams could grow well to attract both national and international attention.
“You have the opportunity to become highly marketable at both the national and international levels, but that will come depending on your discipline and hard work”, he said.
Mr Seth Pamwum, the General Manager of the Wa All Stars, appealed to the political leaders of the three regions in the north not to renege on their pledge and support the Wa All Stars which would be playing the African Confederation soon.
