Gambia Minister for Higher Education and Religious Affairs resigns
The number of Ministers resigning from the Cabinet of Gambian president, Yahya Jammeh has risen to five as at today January 18, 2017. The Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and Religious Affairs, tendered in his resignation today.
It is however, no clear if he had fled the country.
In his resignation letter, Prof. Dr. Aboubacar A. Senghore said he has been under insurmountable pressure to resign from Janaury 9, 2016. “I have been morally and legally bound to continue serving under your leadership to the end of your tenure.”
“Given my strong religious and legal background, I feel it is now ethically and legally speaking time to step down as Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and Religious Affairs as the constitutional mandate of the current government expires today, Wednesday January 18, 2017.”
Four other ministers have earlier resigned and fled the country. They are Sheriff Bojang, Communications Minister, Foreign Minister, Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, Abdou Kolley, Finance Minister and Abdou Jobe, Trade Minister.
There is general tension and fear in The Gambia as the day comes to a close. President-elect, Adama Barrow, currently is the Senegalese capital, Dakar, insists, he would be sworn-in tomorrow, January 19, 2017. Meanwhile, the country’s National Assembly has passed resolutions and extended its own term, imposed a State of Emergency and extended Jammeh’s term in office for another 90 days.
