Magistrate supervises demolition of ‘Akpeteshie’ spots

The Magistrate of Wamfie District Court in the Dormaa-East District, Mr Kaakyire Atta-Owusu has supervised the demolition of two local gin (akpeteshie) spots at Wamfie.

The spots have been identified by the police as hide-outs for criminals and drug addicts.

The magistrate granted the demolition of the spots, when he remanded two alleged thieves Isaac Yeboah 22, and Saah Abraham for stealing GH¢1,800 and three mobile phones belonging to one Mr Kofi Amankona alias C.K. at Wamfie.

Giving the facts, Police Chief Inspector A. A. Doudu said the complainant returned from Accra and kept the money and the three phones under his pillow and slept.

The prosecution said when the complainant woke up he detected that his money and cell phones were gone.

Chief Inspector Duodu said Mr Amankona’s own investigations revealed that the burglars broke through the window.

He said during police investigations a mobile phone shop owner at Berekum who had heard about the theft caused the arrest of Saah Abraham who attempted to update information on one of the stolen phones in his shop.

The Chief Inspector said Saah Abraham in his cautioned statement admitted the offence and mentioned Isaac Amponsah, owner of the one of the akpeteshie spots as the architect of the theft.

Chief Inspector Duodu said Abraham revealed that Amponsah was the one who monitored the driver’s movement from Accra to Wamfie and gathered information about the money on his vehicle.

So far only one cell phone has been retrieved from the suspected thieves who had both pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful entry and stealing.

Chief Inspector Duodu indicated that Wamfie police had launched a search for two other members of the gang who had bolted since the incident.

The two who were on remand were billed to re-appear before the court.
