Fodzoku gets water after 30 years

 

Safe Water Network, a not-for-profit international organisation, has commissioned a 100,000 dollar water station at Fodzoku in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

 

The “H2OME Water Station” will serve 13 small towns and marks the end of 30 years without potable water in the Volta River Authority (VRA) resettlement community.

 

Some children from the catchment area were said to have drowned in the Volta Lake in the quest of fetching water from the Lake.

 

The Ghana News Agency also learnt that pupils in the area abandoned classes every Friday in search of water for their teachers.

 

Togbega Affum III, Paramount Chief of Fodzokuin, a speech read on his behalf, said the intervention from Safe Water Network had changed the destiny of Fodzoku from being a “promised land without water…”

 

He said the facility had averted the situation where children fetched water before and after school daily and prayed for some more support for the water to reach the over 5,000 population in the fishing and farming communities.

 

Mr John Keys, the Executive Vice President of Safe Water Network, hinted of plans to expand the facility to cater for the growing population in the area and urged the communities to take care of the system.

 

Mr Divine Dugbartey, the Volta Regional Director of Community Water and Sanitation Agency, said the Fodzoku Water Station had added to the rural water supply in small towns in the region and pledged to partner Safe Water Network to train members of the Fodzoku Water Board in managing the system.

 

Mr Charles Nimako, the Country Director of Safe Water Network, said his outfit was working at providing safe water to 200 communities in Ghana within four years.

 

He said in the past six years the Network had provided safe water to 90 communities across the country.
