Parts of Sunyani hit by severe water crisis

Parts of Sunyani, the Brong-Ahafo Regional capital have been hit by serious water crisis and this is making things uncomfortable for many of the residents.

The worst affected areas are Nkwabeng North and South, Penkwasi, New-Dormaa, SSNIT Residential and Airport Residential Areas.

For the past two weeks, water had not been running from the standpipes in these neighborhoods, forcing people to queue up at car washing bays for water.

The situation has been compounded by the dry up of streams running through some of the suburbs because of the lack of rainfall.

The Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company (GWC), Mr. Charles Brobbey, could not be reached by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to know steps taken to deal with the unpleasant situation.

An official, who asked that he should not be identified because he has not been authorized to speak, blamed unregulated gold mining, which was destroying the Tano River, the main source of water supply to the municipality for the problem.

He, however, indicated that the company was working tirelessly to find a lasting solution.

Meanwhile, information posted on the official website of the company’s regional office shows that over the past two years, there had been major transformation in terms of operational efficiency, improvement of infrastructure, customer relations and re-branding.

There had been replacement of equipment and installation boosters, power stabilizers and regulators at the Biaso headworks.

The number of the company’s customers now stands at 18,155 with pay point outlets having climbed from seven to 13.
