WaterAid Ghana shows the benefit of providing potable water through photo exhibition

WaterAid Ghana has opened a week-long photo exhibition at the W.E.B. Dubois Centre, Accra, to show the benefits of providing access to potable water and sanitation in marginalised communities in parts of Ghana.

 

The event, expected to run from Monday, February 13 to Friday, February 17, is to celebrate the achievements of the five-year Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation’s (HSBC) Water Programme which began from October 2012 to December 2016.

 

The five-year project sought to reach out to 120,000 people with safe potable water and another 80,000 people with good sanitation and hygiene practices in 104 communities across five district assemblies in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, and Eastern regions.

 

The beneficiary district assemblies are Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa, Birim North and Kwahu Afram Plains. They have benefited from 43 institutional latrines and 90 water facilities.

 

Mr Abdul-Nashiru Mohammed, the Country Director of WaterAid, said proceeds from the photos auctioned would be invested in reaching out to more marginalised communities with potable water, sanitation and hygiene practices.

 

The exhibition brought together executives of the WaterAid Ghana, some members of the WaterAid Ghana Advisory Committee, representatives of HSBC Malta and the media.

 

There were exhibits of newly built water plants and toilet blocks at Wayamba and Zogbeli M/A JHS Block both peri-urban communities located north of the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.

 

Other pictures showed the solar WaterAid facility at Assanyansu in Afram Plains and new toilet blocks at Tweapease NO.2 Basic school in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

 

The rest of the pictures on display showed beneficiaries in the various assemblies drinking the water from the facility and using it to cook, bath, wash , make batik tie-and-dye and extract palm oil.
