Journalists schooled on maritime industry

Mr Kofi Mbiah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shipper’s Council, has urged journalists, particularly those in the Western Region, to specialize in particular fields of study so they can feed the public with more informative stories.

“With the inflow of oil and gas in the region, journalists have to educate themselves on the terms and jargons of that sector and the maritime industry to enable them to churn out masterpieces that will meet international standards”, he added.

Mr Mbiah said this at a Maritime Seminar organised for Journalists in the region on Thursday to enlighten them on the opportunities and challenges in the maritime industry.

He indicated that the Council is in the process of initiating a modification into the Marine Insurance Act of Ghana to cover ships owned by Ghanaians.

Mr. Martison Ankobiah, Port Safety and Security manager at Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority in Takoradi, who spoke on “The Role of the Port as a Link in the Logistic Chain,” noted that security had improved considerably at the various ports and harbours across the country.

He said the Takoradi port continued to perform both regulatory and operational functions to ensure that individuals’ cargo were delivered on time and under strict security regulations.

Mr Ankobiah noted that the performance of the port had also improved in terms of port traffic, import cargo traffic, and ship productivity among others.

He, however, added that the port lacked adequate berthing capacity, proper truck terminal, and poor railway system among others, which hamper effective operation.
