UNFPA supports Ghana Police Service to meet international standards
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), is supporting the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service to meet international standards in Data Management systems.
As part of the support, Police Officers made up of investigators and DOVVSU Desk Officers in each of the ten regions in Ghana are benefiting from a- two day capacity building training on Information Data Management.
The Consultant of the project, Mr Senanu Agbozo , said this in Bolgatanga at one of such training programmes.
He said as part of the project, an online data management system had been developed where the officers were being trained to send data on Domestic violence issues electronically from the Districts to the Regional level, which in turn would be fed into the server room at the national level to properly inform policy decisions and formulation.
The Consultant said the new project would not only replace the former manual system of documenting domestic violence issues, but would also help reduce the work load drastically.
He told the officers that under the project, information management system on Domestic Violence offences was not only arranged alphabetically but had a software that automatically calculated the number of reported cases at the Regional and national levels and access to information would no longer be a problem except classified information.
The Consultant who stated that it was the intention of the UNFPA to make DOVVSU a national focal point for data, took the participants through topics including; User Interface, Administrator Interface and Data analysing model.
The Upper East Deputy Regional Police Commander, DCP John Owiredu-Nkansah, mentioned that one of the biggest challenges facing the police service was information management particularly on suspected cases.
He entreated the officers to spread the training to include; the remaining officers at the District level.
He said in the era of technological advancement, the Police could not operate efficiently without training in the area of Information Communication Technology and commended the UNFPA.
The Upper East Deputy Coordinator of DOVVSU, ASP Veronica Obese, who expressed happiness that the project would empower the DOVVSU to become the referral source of credible information on Domestic Violence, Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse in Ghana, said UNFPA had over the years supported the Regional Directorate of DOVVSU in the areas of capacity building, training of staff, and public education on Gender Based Violence.
