Court upholds referee Lamptey‘s life ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has upheld the decision by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Disciplinary Committee, which placed a life ban on Ghana’s referee Joseph O. Lamptey.

Referee Lamptey, by the ban would not take part in any football-related activity, be it administrative, sports or any other at national and international level for life.

This comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), in a statement on FIFA’s official website yesterday September 6, 2017, ordered a replay of the South Africa-Senegal World Cup Qualifier match played on the 12th of November, 2016, decided to maintain the lifetime ban sentence initially made by FIFA’s Disciplinary and Appeal Committee to referee J.O Lamptey.

The statement said, “The Bureau for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers ordered a replay of the qualification match between South Africa and Senegal held on 12 November 2016.

“This decision follows the confirmation of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to uphold the lifetime ban of match referee Lamptey, for match manipulation, the ruling imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary and Appeal Committees.” – FIFA.

Lamptey, in the said match awarded a dubious penalty to South Africa in the 43th minute, which game them a 2:1 over the Terenga Lions of Senegal, consequently sending Bafana Bafana top of Group D with four points after two games prior to their one all draw away against Burkina Faso in their first qualifier.
