Ministry gives artisanal Insulated containers to fishmongers 

Fish mongers in twelve fishing communities have received ice holding containers that can keep fish fresh for ten days after harvest under a pilot undertaken by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD).

The artisanal insulated containers was designed and built by local experts to minimise post-harvest fish loses as well as increase the incomes of fish mongers who are usually poor and vulnerable.

Addressing a group of women leaders near the Tema Fishing harbour, Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister, MOFAD, said the Ministry was committed to ensuring fish food and nutrition security all year round.

“Access shall also be improved through poverty alleviation strategies including credit and knowledge of health benefits which will also improve upon fish utilization,” she said.

According to her,” The marine (sea) resource which happens to be our main supply of fish is on the decline due to overfishing, over-exploitation and over capacity of our fishing vessels.”

She announced that aquaculture and marine culture would be vigorously pursed while laws are enforced to enhance the country’s aim at becoming a net exporter of fish in the foreseeable future.

The Minister charged the fisher folk to eschew all forms of illegal fishing including the use of chemicals which was harmful to humans.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Samuel Duodu Manu, Director, Post-Harvest, MOFAD, said the containers could last for 25 years and were user-friendly.

According to him, the fishmongers needed a handy storage container which could help provide fresh fish in their day to day retail hence the conception and design of the item.
