UN experts on use of mercenaries visit Ghana

The United Nations Working Group on the use of mercenaries is visiting Ghana this week. The UN in a press release copied to ghanabusinessnews.com, says the group visiting the country from December 8 to 15, 2017 comprises of Anton Katz and Patricia Arias.

The experts, the UN says are in the country “to assess the regulation of private security companies and the measures in place to address the challenges posed by mercenarism and mercenary related activities, including foreign fighters and their impact on human rights.”

During the visit, the delegation, it says, will hold meetings in Accra and Takoradi with representatives from relevant government ministries, members of civil society including non-governmental organizations, private security companies and companies operating in the extractive industry.

Established in July 2005 by the then Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations Working Group on the use of mercenaries mandate was further extended by the Human Rights Council in 2008.

The Group is comprised of five independent expert members from various regions of the world.
