Assemblyman arrested for illegal electricity connection

The Agbozume District Police in the Volta Region has arrested Dick Dogbey Amedoda, Assemblyman for Logove Electoral Area in the Ketu-South Municipality for allegedly tapping power illegally from the national grid to run his business.

A press release made available to the Ghana News Agency said Mrs. Christine Hadzi, Denu District Manager, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) said the arrest followed a report made by some staff of the Company who detected the illegality while on routine monitoring operations.

She said the Assemblyman who operated a corn mill owed the ECG about GHȼ31,000.00 and following threats by the Company to disconnect his power supply; he paid GHȼ1, 000.00.

Mrs Hadzi said the Assemblyman’s refusal to pay the remaining debt led to the disconnection of power supply to his facility.

She said the Assemblyman then tapped power supply to the corn mill from his residence, which was also disconnected by ECG when it was detected.

Mrs Hadzi said the Company later discovered that the Assemblyman personally replaced the meter which had been disconnected, and reconnected power supply with no record of the new meter in the ECG system.

She said further checks revealed that the Assemblyman did illegal connection and this led to his arrest.
