Kumasi readies for NPP extraordinary delegates’ conference
An extraordinary delegates’ conference to discuss and adopt changes to the constitution of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) opens at the Heroes Park – Baba Yara Sports Stadium, this coming Sunday.
Delegates’ from across all the 275 constituencies and the party’s overseas branches, founding members and patrons are expected to attend.
They would be joined by Ministers of State, Members of Parliament (MPs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMCEs).
About 5,000 people are anticipated to gather to decide on the constitutional changes, proposed at its conference held in last August, in Cape Coast.
The atmosphere in Kumasi – which traditionally has remained the party’s stronghold, appears subdued with barely 48 hours to the start of the conference.
The usual excitement often seen during such events – hanging of party flags and banners on lampposts along the principal streets and decoration of sidewalks with party colors, completely absent.
This is perhaps understandable given the fact that it is not going to involve any election.
Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen Association, said everything was in place for a successful conference.
He added that adequate security measures had been taken to ensure that all went well.
He said delegates coming from places far away from Kumasi would begin arriving in the city 24 hours to conference.
