GRA should have effective mobile tax collection system

The Ghana Revenue Authority GRA) has been asked to put in place effective mobile tax collection system to make it easier for those in the informal sector to pay their taxes in some convenience.

Mrs. Faustina Koranteng, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) Municipal Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), said this had become necessary as efforts being made to bring more people into the tax net through public education intensified.

She said there needed to a system that would make it less difficult for people ready to honour their tax obligation to do so.

She made the call during a tax education campaign in some selected communities in the municipality and this targeted informal sector workers.

She indicated that tax collectors should not always sit in the comfort of their offices and expect traders and other informal sector workers to walk to them.

The call comes amid complaints by traders and non-formal taxpayers of having to travel long distances from their workplaces to the GRA offices to pay their taxes.

Mrs. Koranteng noted that sustained tax education in the municipality was yielding positive results as many had been expressing readiness to comply.

She promised to continue to deepen the engagement – conversation with identifiable groups – beauticians, hairdressers and artisans, the churches and mosques to get everybody to pay their taxes.
