Koku Anyidoho granted bail

Koku Anyidoho, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who was arrested by the Police over alleged treasonable comments, was on Thursday granted bail.

Mr Godwin Tamakloe, one of the lawyers for Anyidoho in response to a Ghana News Agency enquiry, confirmed the bail, through a text message.

He, however, did not state whether the bail was granted by the Police or by a Court.

The NDC Deputy General Secretary has been charged with high treason and causing fear, following his comments on an Accra-based radio station during an interview.

He reportedly stated that there would be a “civil revolt” in the country, and that series of activities had been planned to unsettle the Akufo-Addo led Government, beginning with Wednesday’s scheduled demonstration against the recent Ghana United States Military Cooperation Agreement.

According to reports, Mr Anyidoho referred to the 1972 Military coup d’état that overthrew Prime Minster Busia’s Administration, in which Mr Edward Akufo-Addo, the father of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, was the President, saying history had an interesting way of repeating itself.        

The Police, consequently, picked up Anyidoho for questioning on Tuesday, March 27, at the Ghana International Press Centre, after he had addressed journalists on the planned demonstration, to be held across the country.
