Ashgold subdues Kotoko in Ghana premiership top-liner

Ghana Premier League (GPL) leaders, Ashgold S/C, coasted home to a 2-0 victory over rivals, Asante Kotoko S/C, in a match day five top-liner at the Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi, on Sunday.

The score-line leaves the Miners still unbeaten in the league and currently, sitting on top of the log on 13 points.

The regional derby lived up to its pre-match hype, producing all the excitement associated with fixtures involving the two Ashanti-based clubs.

Two-time African champions, Kotoko, would in the first half, deploy a defensive strategy to overcome Ashgold’s attacking duo of Amos Addae and Appiah McCarthy.

Addae, who had been the playmaker for the Miners so far this season, had a tough time dealing with the Porcupine Warriors’ diminutive defender, Augustine Sefah, at the right full-back.

He virtually cut all the supplies to the Ashgold playmaker and the only decent chance created by the homers was saved by Kotoko goalie, Felix Annan, in the 24th minute.

The visitors would finish the half strongly, coming out of their defensive shelves to attack the Miners, but the three set-pieces they profited from their efforts were all wasted.

Ashgold came into the second half a transformed side as they dictated the pace of the game to fetch the opener in the 74th minute.

It was Ibrahim Samed who was on target for the Miners as he headed home a well-taken cross to unsettle the Porcupine Warriors.

Ashgold’s Shaffiu Mumuni doubled the scoring for the Miners two minutes later, and it was from a terrific shot which beat goalie, Annan, in the process.

Kotoko would fight hard in search of the needed goals, therefore, marshalling all their attacking forces into action, however, the Miners defended gallantly to carry the day.
