Six trapped to death, four injured at Newmont Ahafo Mine   

Six miners were trapped to death, when the reclaim tunnel roof of the Newmont Ahafo Mine Expansion Project at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District of the Brong-Ahafo Region collapsed on Saturday.

Four other miners who sustained various degrees of injury were treated at the company’s clinic at the plant site and had since been discharged.

The names of the deceased yet to be known were contract employees of Consar Limited, a construction services company.

A statement issued by the mine and signed by Mr. Kwame Agbeko Azumah, the Manager, Communication and External Relations, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Sunday said the Company had suspended operations and had notified the families of the deceased.

It said the mine had also notified all relevant authorities, while it cooperated with the Police on their investigations.

“The entire Newmont family is devastated by this tragic accident and our priority is to provide support to the families, friends and co-workers of the deceased,” said Alwyn Pretorius, Regional Senior Vice President of Newmont’s Africa Operations.

“All employees working in the area have been safely relocated and the scene of the accident has been secured. The police are on site and the appropriate government and regulatory agencies have been notified including the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission”, it added.  

As at the time of filing this report, the GNA gathered that Mr. John Peter Amewu, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources had visited the Plant site and interacted with Management of the Mine.
