US is leading source of remittances into Ghana in 2017
The largest source of remittances inflows into Ghana in 2017 was the United States of America (USA), according to the World Bank. In that year an amount of $2.2 billion was remitted into the country, and that is a 4.3 per cent increase from that of 2016, making Ghana the fifth largest remittances recipient in Africa.
Remittances from the USA into Ghana amounted to $585 million. $395 million came from Nigeria, the second largest, followed by the United Kingdom – $286 million, Italy $145 million and Germany, $115 million.
Remittances to sub-Saharan Africa rose 11.4 per cent to $38 billion in 2017, and the largest recipient country in Africa was Nigeria which received $21.9 billion; followed by Kenya, which received $2 billion.
Uganda received $1.4 billion, Mali – $1 billion and $900 million went to South Africa.
