Former Vice President Amissah-Arthur dies
Former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur is dead. Officials in his office have confirmed to the media that he died this morning June 29, 2018.
Mr. Amissah-Arthur was pronounced dead at the 37 Military Hospital after he collapsed at the Air Force gym early this morning, they said. He was 67 years old.
A statement from the family signed by Jabesh Amissah-Arthur reads:
“With deep regrets, we announce the sudden demise of the immediate
past Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency K. B.
Amissah-Arthur, in Accra this morning.
The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support in this
moment of grief. In due course, the family would keep the public
informed of the funeral arrangements.
Respectfully, we wish to request that the media gives the family some
privacy in these very difficult times.”
Mr. Amissah-Arthur was last seen in public last week actively involved in the constituency elections of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the central region and at the book launch of his wife, Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur
Some Ghanaian political actors have since expressed shock and extended condolatory messages to the immediate family, the party on whose ticket he served, the NDC and the general Ghanaian populace for the loss of this dutiful and peaceful public servant.
President Nana Akufo-Addo described the former Vice President as a longstanding public servant, who discharged his duties with dignity.
“He was a longstanding public servant, who discharged his duties with dignity. The news of his death is unfortunate, since he appeared to have a lot to contribute to the public life of our country’’, the President said on his official Facebook page.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also in a Facebook post, described his predecessor as somebody who has dutifully served our nation in the high offices of Governor of the Bank of Ghana and Vice President of the Republic.
“He was always civil and can be described as a first class gentleman. My condolence to his family, wife, children, the NDC fraternity and the entire nation,’’ Dr. Bawumia.
Mr. Amissah-Arthur, who was an economist once served as PNDC Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, a former University of Ghana lecturer, he was appointed as Governor of the Bank of Ghana in October 2009 by the Late President John Evans Atta Mills. He left the Bank in August 2012.
He is survived by a wife and two adult children.
