SEWA Foundation lauds government for human trafficking interventions
The SEWA Foundation has lauded government for taking the appropriate steps to ensure that the requisite institutions are established to coordinate and prosecute an anti-human trafficking agenda.
He said Ghana’s fight against human trafficking had received an international recognition as the latest Trafficking in Persons (TIP) upgraded the country’s Tier 2 Watch List to a Tier 2 ranking in the 2018 TIP report.
Mr Jones Owusu Yeboah, the Chief Executive Officer of Se Eye Woba AnKa (SEWA) Foundation said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday, to mark the 2018 World Day Against Human Trafficking.
He said trafficking steals the human right, dignity and pride of the individual and we must all be part of protecting each other by being vigilant.
He said the Foundation had undertaken many rescue operations with its partners in the Gulf States and had rescued close to 10 people this year.
The United Nations (UN) World Day Against Human Trafficking is also known as the ‘Blue Day’.
The Day calls on the world to end the impunity of perpetrators of human trafficking and help victims by showing compassion.
In 2013, the UN member states adopted a resolution, which designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. They declared that such a Day was necessary to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights”.
Mr Owusu Yeboah said the Foundation has intensified its awareness-creation campaign to educate people in the rural areas on the dangers of human trafficking, child labour and child abuse to protect children in the country, adding that, the Foundation had trained students of the University of Ghana, who are undertaking the exercise.
He bemoaned how some individuals squandered monies from migrants meant to be given to their families.
He called on government to assist the SEWA Foundation to get the remittance details of migrants to create a bank account for them to help secure their monies for their families.
Mr Owusu Yeboah commended the International Organisation for Migration for its support over the years.
The SEWA Foundation is a non-governmental organization committed to the eradication of human trafficking and modern day slavery.
Focused on contributing to the reduction of the causes of child trafficking and child slavery, it operates in the areas of anti-human trafficking, anti-human smuggling, prevention of child abuse and child labour in Ghana.
