TMA will prosecute anyone who blocks Tema sewer line – Metropolitan engineer
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) will prosecute anyone who dumps insoluble materials into the Metropolis sewer system.
Mr Solomon Noi, Tema Metropolitan Waste Management Engineer, gave the caution on Friday after removing a five-inch cement block from a manhole located five metres from the entrance of the Assembly’s Headquarters.
Mr Noi, who was visibly enraged by what he saw, stressed that “we are mounting up surveillance at the place and when we catch anybody near the manhole, we will let the law take its full course”.
“The manhole and sewer-lines are not their properties. They don’t have business tempering with our manhole to make it look like it is always overflowing”
According to him. Some unknown persons who were intentionally blocking the manhole for their selfish reasons, carried out their activities when his men closed from work.
He explained that the Tema sewer line was a system network which flowed from a higher elevation to the lower part and any blockage in it led to an overflow due to the force of gravity.
The Waste Engineer noted that on Wednesday when the manhole got partially opened spilling faeces onto the road, his men opened it to rectify the issue only to find a jute sack filled with refuse stuck in the pipe.
He added that on Friday morning, when they reported for work, they found the same manhole heavily overflowing even though it had not rained not knowing, a five-inch block had been forced into it.
Mr Noi said even though it was not the best to permanently seal the manhole as it could lead to the build up of gas which could lead to an explosion.
