Pharm. D must be recognised as a First Degree Programme – Council

The National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and National Accreditation Board (NAB) Monday said the six-year Doctor of Pharmacy  (Pharm.D) programme being run by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is a first degree professional programme and not a postgraduate  degree.

A statement issued the NCTE in Accra, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the classification of the Programme was just like that of the Doctor of

Optometry and Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS.D) and should be  treated as such.

The NCTE and NAB, in 2016, approved the introduction of the Programme on the recommendations of the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, the Ministry of Health and  the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO), the statement said.

The programme aims at harmonising the training of Pharmacists internationally and across the West Africa Region as well as to enhance the clinical competence of Pharmacists in Ghana.

The Pharm. D. programme replaced the previous four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy programme run in the country.
